Ilish Khichuri

Ilish Khichuri (Hilsa Khichuri) is one of the most beloved traditional dishes in Bangladesh, especially during the rainy season. This comforting meal combines fragrant rice, lentils, aromatic spices, and the rich flavor of Hilsa fish. The soft, flavorful khichuri paired with tender pieces of Hilsa creates a perfect balance of taste and aroma, making it an ideal choice for family gatherings, special occasions, and festive meals.

Ingredients

  • 800 gm Hilsha
  • 1 cup Nazirshail rice
  • 1/2 cup Lentils
  • 1/4 cup Oil
  • 1/4 cup Chopped onion
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp Cumin paste
  • 1/4 tsp ginger paste
  • 1/4 tsp garlic paste
  • Salt as per taste
  • 2 cup Water
  • 6 pcs green chili

Instructions

  • Add 800 gm hilsha
  • Boil the fish without head and tail
  • Keep the boiled fish water in a separate bowl
  • Remove the fishbones
  • Add 1 cup nazirshail rice and 1/2 cup lentils
  • Add 1/4 cup oil
  • Add 1/4 cup chopped onion and add little bit of water
  • Add 1 tsp red chilli powder,1/2 tsp turmeric powder,1/4 tsp cumin paste,1/4 tsp ginger paste,1/4 tsp garlic paste stir well
  • Add salt as per taste
  • Add washed rice and lentils
  • Lightly fry and add 2 cup warm water
  • Add the boiled fish water
  • Allow it to cook for 7–8 minutes
  • Add the boiled fish
  • Add 6 pcs green chilli
  • Allow to cook for 10 minutes until flavors combine well
  • Ready to serve
