Dal Gosht: Beef Chana Dal

You're in for a treat if you've never tasted dal gosht. This meal is a tasty lentil stew with meat, which is what the words "dal" and "gosht" signify.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 kg beef
  • 1 cup chana dal
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 1 cup onion chopped/sliced
  • 2-1 pcs bay leaves
  • 2-1 pcs cinnamon
  • 4-5 pcs cardamom
  • 10-12 pcs black pepper
  • 1/2 tbsp salt
  • 1 tbsp ginger paste
  • 1 tbsp garlic paste
  • 1/2 tbsp cumin paste
  • 1 tbsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tbsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tbsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg powder
  • 1/2 tsp mace powder
  • 3 cups hot water
  • 5-6 pcs green chili
  • 1/4 tsp cumin powder

Instructions

  • In a bowl take 1 cup of chana dal. Soak in water for 2 hrs.
  • Heat oil in a pan.
  • Add the chopped onions and stir until it turns slightly brown.
  • Then add bay leaves, cinnamon, cardamom, black pepper, and salt. Stir for some time.
  • Add ginger paste, garlic paste, and cumin paste. Add little water. Stir very well.
  • Add chili powder, turmeric powder, and coriander powder. Stir until raw smells go away. Add little water if needed during the process.
  • Wash, drain, and add beef.
  • Mix well. Keep stirring for 2-3 mins. Close the lid and cook for 5 minutes.
  • Add nutmeg powder and mace powder. Give a good mix.
  • Close the lid and cook for 20 minutes. Stir occasionally.
  • Wash, drain, and add soaked dal.
  • Mix and stir for 3-4 minutes. Close the lid and cook for 5 minutes.
  • Add 3 cups of hot water.
  • Stir and close the lid. Cook for 30 mins. Stir occasionally.
  • Add green chili, and cumin powder.
  • Stir and close the lid. Cook on low heat for 10 mins.
  • Serve hot with porata or polao!
