In a bowl take 1 cup of chana dal. Soak in water for 2 hrs.
Heat oil in a pan.
Add the chopped onions and stir until it turns slightly brown.
Then add bay leaves, cinnamon, cardamom, black pepper, and salt. Stir for some time.
Add ginger paste, garlic paste, and cumin paste. Add little water. Stir very well.
Add chili powder, turmeric powder, and coriander powder. Stir until raw smells go away. Add little water if needed during the process.
Wash, drain, and add beef.
Mix well. Keep stirring for 2-3 mins. Close the lid and cook for 5 minutes.
Add nutmeg powder and mace powder. Give a good mix.
Close the lid and cook for 20 minutes. Stir occasionally.
Wash, drain, and add soaked dal.
Mix and stir for 3-4 minutes. Close the lid and cook for 5 minutes.
Add 3 cups of hot water.
Stir and close the lid. Cook for 30 mins. Stir occasionally.
Add green chili, and cumin powder.
Stir and close the lid. Cook on low heat for 10 mins.
Serve hot with porata or polao!
